What’s in Green Tea and Why You Need It

Green tea gets a lot of press for a lot of reasons. From a weight reducer to an appetite suppressant to a disease fighter, it seems just too incredible to believe that a little tea leave could pack so much power.

But all the hype is true and here are the reasons why.

Green Tea: Your Health and Weight

Alkaloids

Alkaloids are stimulating compounds. In green tea, they include caffeine, theobromine and theophylline.

  • The alkaloids in green tea provide high energy without rattling nerves or causing an unhealthy increase in heart rate.
  • They are also responsible for increasing your own natural fat burning metabolism.

Catechins

Catechins are a category of polyphenols specifically epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).

  • EGCG has been credited with inhibiting cancer cells without harming healthy cells, lowering bad LDL cholesterol levels and preventing blood clot formation.
  • A powerful antioxidant, catechins are the fat busting substance in green tea.
  • Studies indicate that catchins reduce the amount of malondialdehyde and thiobarbituric acid in the blood stream.
  • There is a correlation between these two acids and a high body mass index (BMI).
  • Catchins are especially effective in burning subcutaneous fat found in the belly.

Flavonoids

Flavonoids are plant pigments. Also known as Vitamin P, they are a category of polyphenols.

  • Flavonoids are critical to plant growth and preventing demise by microbes, fungi and insects.
  • Mostly found in fruits and vegetables, flavonoids also help you fight infection.
  • They are high in antioxidants and can prevent cell damage that can lead to cancer, heart disease, premature aging and Alzheimer's.

Tannins

Tannins are a group of phenol and polyphenols compounds, which are slightly acidic substances and potent antioxidants.

  • Tannins are also found in fruit, vegetables, chocolate and wine.
  • They are astringents, which cause swollen tissue including tumors to shrink.
  • Antioxidants fight free radicals (mutant cells) that damage DNA and cause disease.
  • Tannins are the bitter taste in green tea.

Theanine

Theanine is an amino acid that causes a tranquilizing effect.  Theanine is able to cross the blood-brain barrier and reduce mental and physical stress.

  • It has been shown effective in enhancing the ability to learn and improving memory.
  • It can lower high blood pressure.
  • Theanine supports your immune system functioning.
  • It lowers the fats and triglycerides levels in your body.
